Mt Hood - 3/29/2025

Friday night and I had no plans for the weekend. I never like that. I finished sewing a stuff-sack and was eating a quick dinner before a school frisbee game when I saw Emily email me. “Hood tomorrow?”. I quickly looked through the forecasts, talked to my parents, and after sending a last minute email to my frisbee coach, packed up the car and started driving. I arrived at government camp at midnight, happy to get a few hours of sleep in. At 4:30 I was back awake and met Emily. We drove up to timberline and started skinning through the cloud at 05:00. We watched a few parties turn back but decided we’d go until crater rock and then decide based on visibility. Once past palmer the sun started shining and visibility started improving. We kept working our way and by crater rock, there were blue skies. We took a break in the sun and worked our way up, dropping our skis at the top of the hogsback.

From here, we took out our second tools and worked our way up to old chute. We followed a set of tracks, leading us to mazama chute. With a quark and ultralight axe it felt pretty easy but emily had a little more trouble with her straight shaft BD axe. From here we were quickly on the summit where we enjoyed the clear skies

After a nice summit break, we started working our way back down. Downclimbing mazama chute was a little more involved but soon we were at our skis. After a good winter of ski touring, me and emily both agreed that we were tired of stopping all the time so in a nice long push with maybe 1 break in the middle, we quickly skied all the way to the car, arriving at noo.n Somehow I ended up doing more driving than skiing on this trip.
